A few makeup looks from some of my favorite February reads:

• LEGENDBORN by Tracy Deonn 🧝🏾‍♀️
It’s wild to me that this is a DEBUT?! I don’t normally read Fantasy books but this one was calling to me and I’m so glad I listened. Deonn created an extraordinary world and seamlessly wove together elements of fantasy with our harsh reality – Bree’s grief for her mother, the racism she endured within The Order, and tracing her lineage back through magic make this story whole. I can’t wait to keep watching Bree continue to grow into her power!

• THE DEATH OF VIVEK OJI by Akwaeke Emezi 🇳🇬
Few books have left me speechless and this just joined the list. Emezi’s writing is a godsend – so poetic in the way they express joy and friendship, the nuances of gender identity, and the trauma of losing a young person no one truly understood, but knew they loved with everything they had. We receive this story through various perspectives, all of which will break and heal your heart over and over again. I can’t recommend enough.

• FRIDAY BLACK by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah 🕷
I was on the edge of my seat for almost every story – I was full of familiar rage during “The Finkelstein 5” and kicking and punching the air during the closing story, “Through The Flash.” Honestly all of these could be “Black Mirror” episodes, especially “Zimmer Land” and “Friday Black” in particular. No matter how intense each story is, the underlying reality many face every day is still center stage and impossible to not acknowledge. These characters reckon with the monsters of racism, violence, and capitalism to name a few, so it’s an understatement that this is a heavy read, but Adjei-Brenyah’s ideas and writing make it worth every second.
