RANDOM FAMILY, ADRIAN NICOLE LEBLANC
Latinx Heritage Month, Book 2

“Random Family” is a work of non-fiction that follows the lives of Jessica and Coco, two Latinas from the Bronx, from their teenage years into adulthood in the Bronx. While at the center of the story, there are countless others whose lives are woven into their own, including notoriously wealthy drug dealer Boy George and Jessica’s brother Cesar.

This was DENSE. I appreciated LeBlanc’s no-holds-barred storytelling and the exploration of the cycles of violence and neglect that was pervasive within Jessica and Coco’s community, as well as the psychological trauma of terrible prison conditions and the ways mass incarceration devastates not only the individual but also those who care about them. The double standards between men and women were ugly and far too common – particularly the nastiness geared towards young women for having children from different men and the acceptance of men having children with multiple women and several girlfriends at once. LeBlanc’s original project of a piece on Boy George spun into working on this book for a decade, being there for many major moments in their lives.

This book raised several questions for me, especially in regards to authors coming into communities of color they are not part of and writing about it. How were Jessica, Coco, and everyone else compensated for their time? How do folks from the Bronx feel about this book and the inevitable assumptions readers will make about their neighborhood? LeBlanc earned a MacArthur Fellowship for this; what did these people get in the end?

I also want to briefly note that there is some anti-Black language in this book that goes unchecked.
