“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.”

One of the greatest Gothic novels of all time, Du Maurier takes us to Manderley, the great Maxim de Winter’s estate. His young bride and the new Mrs. de Winter adjusts to the life of the elite while being haunted by the memory of his first wife, Rebecca.

This is the first Gothic classic I’ve read and it only left me wanting more of the genre. It took me a while to get used to Du Maurier’s prose, but things really picked up once they arrived in Manderley. The story was suspenseful; I felt super tense that a ball was gonna drop at any moment, especially any time Mrs. Danvers entered the room. All the characters were morally gray – no one was awful just for the sake of being awful. I loved the stark contrast between Mrs. de Winter and Rebecca – one timid and submissive, the other dynamic and rebellious. Definitely felt like an intentional move to make them so wildly different, like they were one person split into two.

Also I watched the Hitchcock film adaptation and Laurence Olivier is a goddamn fox. Not thrilled new Maxim is Armie Hammer 😒
