SUCH A FUN AGE, @kileyreid

“I don’t need you to be mad that it happened. I need you to be mad that it just like… happens.”

Twenty-five year old babysitter Emira Tucker is feeling directionless and dreading being kicked off her parent’s health insurance. After a racist incident on the job makes her rethink her career path (despite her love for 3 year old Briar), she is caught in the middle of a decade long disdain between her employer, successful blogger Alix, and the man who recorded the incident on his phone, Kelley.

Reid’s character writing is top tier – Emira as a young Black millennial trying to get herself and her life together, Alix with her White SHE-EO energy, and Kelley as the White tech bro always surrounding himself with Black people. These are definitely people you know in real life.

The exploration of Alix and Kelley’s competition for wokeness at Emiras expense made me examine the idea of “intent vs. impact.” I believe impact trumps intent, but in this case, despite Alix and Kelley making good points about the other, what good are their warnings to Emira when it’s obvious neither of them have her best interest at heart?

Reid also touches on consent here. So many people are convinced you need images of Black trauma and humiliation to go viral to prove racism exists, but who checks in on the people in those images when their face and experiences go public? Did someone ask them first before posting that video on Facebook? Are you honest with yourself about WHY you’re sharing it?
