“She was completely free of ambition, with no affection for money, property or things, no greed, no desire to command attention or compliments—no ego.”

Atop a hill in Medallion, Ohio sits The Bottoms, a Black neighborhood where childhood friends Nel Wright and Sula Peace live, and a character all it’s own. Morrison’s second published novel takes us through their intense connection from the 1920s – 1940s, including their complicated family histories and the eyes that stay on Sula as she returns to The Bottoms as an adult.

What praise can one give Toni Morrison that hasn’t already been said 1000x over? Her writing is rich, poetic, and makes you ache in a way you didn’t realize was possible. Sula as a character was captivating not despite her flaws, but because of them – she was as much messy and thoughtless as she was bold and independent. While she’s described as having “no center, no speck around which to grow” even in her most unlikeable moments, she’s a sight to behold. How can someone live so freely? How can someone so deeply demonized by her community also somehow drive people to be better?

Women and motherhood are the primary focus in this work. With the men of the Wright and Peace families being ultimately useless, these women were left to raise their children alone, making massive sacrifices, seeking entertainment with married men, and even smothering their children to the point of no return. The way the mothers in this book treat their children begs the question of what “love” can mean in a time when the only thing that feels important is survival, and is that enough?
