THE EDUCATION OF MARGOT SANCHEZ, @lilliamr
Latinx Heritage Month, Book 7

We follow 15 year old Margot Sanchez, a Puerto Rican teenager whose family owns a grocery store in the Bronx. After getting caught stealing her father’s credit card to go on a shopping spree with her wealthy private school friends, she’s forced to work off her debt at her father’s grocery store. As she plots to convince her parents to let her attend a party in the Hamptons, she grapples with who she has become and what kind of person she wants to be.

I wish I could say I liked this book – the young Brown girl trying to keep up with her wealthy White friends is a narrative I know far too well. Sadly, this was a miss for me. While I understand teenagers can be messy because being that age is fucking weird, I found Margot arrogant and unlikeable. Not in a way that could’ve been chalked up to simply being young and naive, but she was awful up until the last 20 or so pages, and it was hard to root for her or frankly anyone else in this book. The opportunities to explore race, gentrification, and redemption – themes that would’ve been crucial for Margot to learn about and add to her growth – were not what they could’ve been.
