“It’s always been fascinating to me how things can be simultaneously true and false, how people can be good and bad all in one, how someone can love you in a way that is beautifully selfless while serving themselves ruthlessly.” 💚

In the present day, Evelyn Hugo, an icon of the Golden Age of Hollywood, lives alone in her NYC apartment away from the public eye. One day, her team brings in struggling journalist Monique under the guise of writing about Evelyn’s philanthropic efforts. However, Monique is taken aback when Evelyn reveals she specifically requested Monique to write her autobiography and proceeds to give Monique her entire life story, including the truths behind her seven ex husbands. As Evelyn lays her cards down, Monique gets closer to finding out the truth of the one question on her mind: why did Evelyn choose her?

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Taylor Jenkins-Reid gave us a dynamic, complex anti-hero who used her beauty, wits, and cunning to take Hollywood by storm, no matter the cost. We’re invited into Evelyn’s personal life – how she clawed her way to the top and the fight to stay there, the good/bad/convenience of her marriages, and the real love of her life. It would have been easy to read her as a composite of women like Elizabeth Taylor and others superstars during that time, but Evelyn was fully realized and came to life as her own person. This is a beautifully written book with one of the most complicated, tender, and meant-to-be relationships I’ve ever read. 💓✨
